Republican Senator-elect Scott Brown stood in front of the cameras on Thursday and proclaimed that Washington needs a boost because “we’ve sort of lost our way”. Brown, after his victory against Democrat Martha Coakley in the Massachusetts special Senate election, said he is looking forward to working in Capitol Hill. “I plan to look at every bill and make a rational decision”, Brown said.
“I’m stepping into shoes that are very, very big”, Brown added, referring to the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, who held the position until his death last year.
Washington is “the best place in the world when it comes to solving problems”, according to Brown. After meeting with Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy, he went on to see Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Massachusetts Democratic Sens. Paul Kirk and John Kerry and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
When asked by reporters what he wishes to accomplish, he answered: “I’m certainly not in favour of higher taxes and cutting Medicare half a trillion”.
Brown is expected to be sworn in next week. Inside the office of McCain, he surveyed the reporters and said: “It’s a little overwhelming seeing you all here. I understand it will calm down and we can all get to work. People want good government. They want transparency, they want us to solve problems”.
Brown’s win gives the Republicans the advantage of a 41st Senate vote, stripping Democrats of a supermajority needed to pass a health care overhaul. US President Barack Obama’s midterm agenda may also be derailed due to his victory.
