Democrats in full support of climate change measures

Global warming debates have triggered political arguments over the years. Republicans have been expressing their concern against proposals on climate change, but Democrats continue to remain supportive of measures designed to reduce energy consumption for a better environment. During Tuesday’s hearing on the “cap-and-trade” bill, which is designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80 percent, Democrats spoke for the $3.4 billion new clean energy legislation to be upheld.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, said that the measure is “our best insurance against a dangerous future.”

She added that it is “a responsible approach that sets attainable goals for gradual reductions in carbon emissions, and it protects consumers, businesses and workers as we move toward clean energy.”

Republicans, on the other hand, rejected the proposal. Sen. James Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, commented that the legislation is “a tax, and it will mean more economic pain and suffering and fewer jobs.”

Fifty-four witnesses will testify on the bill.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama, who has been in support of promoting clean energy, announced a $3.4 billion support for the Smart Grid Investment Grant awards.

“By facilitating the creation of a clean energy economy, building this 21st century energy infrastructure will help us lay a foundation for lasting growth and prosperity,” the President said.

The awards, which are funded by the $787 billion stimulus act, will enable the installation of “smart meters” for consumers to control and monitor energy consumption. It will also fund “a broad range of technologies that will spur the nation’s transition to a smarter, stronger, more efficient and reliable electric system,” according to the White House.
