Clinton to Deliver Speech on Nuclear Control

A major speech will be delivered by US secretary of state Hillary Clinton to address concerns on arms control and international security. Clinton, who was assigned by US President Barack Obama to take the lead in securing Senate approval for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, will deliver the speech at the US Institute of Peace on Wednesday.

Clinton will discuss Obama’s strong agenda against nuclear weapons and, at the same time, emphasise the safe and secure strategic force the United States is developing. Her discussion will highlight Obama’s plan to strengthen nuclear control, eliminate nuclear terrorism, and promote the vision of a world without nuclear weapons.

A senior administration official also added that Clinton will address US allies saying that they “should know that we have their backs; any adversary should know we will defend ourselves.” She also hopes to encourage US allies and partners in diplomacy in order to eliminate nuclear threats.

Moreover, a discussion on the measures conducted by Russia and the US in controlling or eliminating the proliferation of nuclear arsenals will take place, including how the efforts are shaping up in securing a non-proliferation agreement with Russia. She also plans to address and encourage non-nuclear countries to take further steps besides disavowing the development of nuclear arms.

The Nuclear Posture Review, which will include a discussion on the role of the State Department, will be part of Clinton’s agenda as well. An inside official stated that Clinton will “insist we review tough questions and end Cold War thinking.”
