Slain soldier honoured by Obama

On Thursday, President Obama praised Sgt. 1st class Jared Monti, who lost his life in an attempt to save his fellow soldier on an Afghan combat zone, leaving cover thrice as Taliban grenades and bullets rained around him.

Obama told his audience that the sacrifice made by the soldier should be remembered by Americans whenever they utter words like heroism, sacrifice, honour, and duty.

Obama further said Monti knew and understood the meaning of service and sacrifice, and declared that Monti’s actions were the culmination of a life of commitment and character, and not a fleeting moment of courage.

As Obama presented his First Medal of Honour, he praised Monti, who led a scouting mission along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Monti called for back-up as the Taliban fighters rushed in.

Obama narrated in vivid detail the story of 16 soldiers who, outnumbered and surrounded by insurgents, maintained their position until reinforcements arrived.

During the encounter, Pvt. Brian Bradbury, one of Monti’s men, was shot. Monti left cover twice and exposed himself to enemy fire to retrieve the injured soldier.

Monti was killed on the field when he was hit by a grenade on his third attempt. Three other soldiers died in the encounter, including Bradbury.

Monti had already received three National Defense Service Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.

In my oppinion, the new American president has a new strong aura… He will do great for America and its people. I respect him for it. he is a great person. And even to personally respect a fallen solider. He is a great person.
